Oolaa II

Oolaa, revisited @ Soho

It was L's birthday and Oolaa was the decided place to go. 8pm on a Friday this place was packed.  Upon seating we decided quickly to share everything...

bread basket

pesto chicken salad ($115)
baby spinach, pine nuts, cherry tomatoes, parmesan cheese, and basil cream
very fresh ingredients, super-tender grilled pesto-flavoured chicken.... we enjoyed this a lot

margarita ($100)
fresh basil, tomato and buffalo mozzarella
base was too hard...it was the bread-y type but for some reason there was no holes in the crust and it was just....hard all around

blue swimmer crab lasagne in creamy abalone sauce ($140)
there was a bed of wilted spinach underneath sheets of pasta and generous amount of crab meat. yes it doesn't look so appetizing but this lasagna did impress. the abalone cheese sauce was good too - my only complaint would be the slightly too-soft pasta sheets.

roasted pumpkin and semi sundried tomato penne ($100)
with basil pesto and pine nuts
penne was al dente and the pesto sauce was good but could've been more 'herby', and more generous with the sun-dried tomatoes and diced pumpkin.

mediterranean vegetable risotto ($110)
with tomato, oregano and pecorino cheese
i had this the night before (i know, shocking), but C wanted to order this so we had it. the rice tonight had no bite like it did the last, but this is a lighter tomato-flavoured version of a risotto, though grilled vegetables as opposed to braised ones would've been nicer. otherwise, not bad and quite comforting.

the new dessert menu - my favourite s'mores were taken off!! so instead we had the pavlova and the cheesecake crunch

Strawberry pavlova ($80)
hmmm... this was much raved-about in reviews and i did like the one at Jaspas so we chose this was our 'birthday cake' with candles and all. but unless your sweet-tooth is mega sweet its hard to go pass a few bites. Whilst the whipped cream did help to mellow the sugar-laden merengue i couldn't help but notice there was actual sugar crystals within the merengue and the center was completely hard rather then slightly soft and chewy like Jaspas'.

Oolaa Cheesecake Crunch ($65)
instead of a cheese cake it was a cheese parfait. layers of fruit jam and whipped cream cheese was a much lighter version of the cheesecake indeed, but plainly too sweet for me and not as gratifying as the real thing! smooth baked cheesecakes showing restraint with the sugar and a crunchy base is the way to go...

although none of us are vegetarians we found ourselves ordering quite a few of their vegetarian selections....which shows Oolaa is a great option for vegetarians out there. After all good vegetarian places are hard to come by in HK.
