Sushi Fuku-suke

Fuku suke @ Causeway Bay

It has been almost two months since i've had sushi (last visit was at Tenzen, which had decent but not particularly memorable quality fish, may post about it later) thanks to exams taking over my life for the past several months. how i crave this stuff! Note to self: must have decent sushi at least once a fortnight =)

So on a friday afternoon i dragged my raw fish-loving brother to causeway bay to visit fuku suke in hopes of ordering their famous assorted sashimi rice bowl...

some appetizers
chawanmushi
we thoroughly enjoyed the chawanmushi for its mild custard-like steamed egg, topped with a shiny thickened sauce for added flavour. inside was some fish cake, mushroom, peas, chicken and crab leg meat - delicious and possibly the best version i've had.
salad with scoop of mashed potato
stewed spinach with shredded fried tofu
Ten pcs assorted sushi set ($180)
except the oxidised lean tuna (second picture, first one on the left), the others were fresh enough, and the grilled conger eel (anago, not unagi) was a pleasant surprise. the sushi was composed of plump granules, seasoned and with wasabi adhering the fish to the rice

assorted sashimi on rice ($280) (no.2) - because one photo does not do it justice!
if this doesn't look enticing i don't know what does. for starters, the quality of the raw seafood were very good for lunch, the sweet shrimp and chu-toro (hidden behind the shrimps) deserve special mention for its sweet and juicy factor. for once, the tamago (rolled scrambled egg) was superbly made - still a light yellow and no signs of brown (which i detest on eggs), and not super-sweet like the many i've tried and sworn off. the rice underneath was sticky and pre-seasoned. our only complaint was that there were literally two or three bowls of rice packed underneath all that fish - impossible to finish with the sushi set between two hungry eaters!
yangmei / red bayberry / yamamomo in sake jelly
I've had a bad experience with these red bayberries before. if not sufficiently ripe, they are nastily sour and may cause you to swear off it. But here, in this clear slightly sweet jelly, was a plump juicy and although tart, also slightly sweet red bayberry. they're currently in season now so if you haven't already, get some from the fruit markets / stalls and try for yourself!

if you ever have the time, do try fuku suke's sashimi rice bowl during lunch hours. its fresh, filling and definitely worth every penny!

Oh I love this place!!!!!! The knife skills of the sushi chef is superb, and everything's so fresh. Recent few times I've been there they've been kinda empty for lunch though :( hope they can survive!
