Saikou

Saikou @ Wellington St., Central

Good raw fish is not easy to find in Central. Many could frankly do better, and the ones that have fresh produce are charging more for rent than for what you get. So, I was quite pleased to find this place =)

The menu has horrendous English typos/mistakes....but language aside, there are a variety of staples including Tempura which Saikou is known for... On both visits, I was craving raw fish so I didn't have the chance to try their tempura...maybe next time.

Appetisers (comes with all lunch sets): Duck breast salad with sesame dressing, konnyaku noodle with mushroom and carrot strips

Sashimi and sushi set ($200)

ridiculously fatty o-toro, sweet shrimps were incredibly fresh and huge slices of sword fish

chu-toro, seabream, olive flounder, ark shell (akagai), vegetarian roll (asparagus), uni gunkan
best thing on the plate was definitely the juicy and plump sweet shrimp sashimi, then the medium fatty tuna sushi which i loved.

chawanmushi
extremely smooth, very light hint of dashi, with mushrooms, ginko nut, fish cake and imitation crab meat.

udon with kelp in a very light broth - noodles were too soft

Chirashi ($160, recently increased to $170) with diced salmon, yellowtail, sweet shrimps, salmon roe and negi.
L had me try some of the vinegared rice under the pile of diced fish and honestly it was really good. I don't remember if i'd had anything so sticky, plump and well-seasoned ever.... although my sushi had essentially the same rice, the raw fish on top were so large you barely got the taste of rice unless you separated them...

baby scoop of green tea ice cream was dessert of the day, you can taste the powdered matcha and not just sweetness - pretty good.

On our second visit we were in and out before the lunch rush, and received a 20% off (leave before 1pm). Since our visit (9 days ago) there had been a price hike.... no surprises for Central...
Today we both went for the sushi platter ($190). L and I both have sashimi we don't like so we told the waiter and our requests were honoured, hence the different platters below.

chawanmushi
steaming hot and silky smooth like last time, very comforting stuff!

duck breast salad with sesame dressing and a mini stewed dish of konnyaku, mushrooms and carrots were the same as our first visit, arrived shortly to whet our appetite.

L's sushi platter - ikura gunkan, uni gunkan, turbo, scallop, tamago/sweet egg, snapper (bottom left), yellowtail, fluke, salmon, chutoro (tuna)

sushi roll with shredded cucumber and tempura batter inside and black flying fish roe on the outside

my sushi platter of chutoro (top left), fluke, yellowtail, seabream, snapper, tamago (bottom left), sweet shrimp, scallop, turbo gunkan, chopped negitoro gunkan

sushi roll - same as L's plate

Honestly Saikou does have very fresh sashimi and lunch sets are generous and satisfying (if you couldn't already tell from the photos!). After two visits we've been converted to Saikou for Japanese lunch sets in Central.

A bowl of udon, same my last visit was also served, but it was left mostly uneaten because the sushi platter was so filling.

dessert of the day - green tea panna cotta with shaved chocolate
mildly sweet, powdery matcha taste, like our ice cream from last time and quite enjoyable
