Soju + Apgujeong Tent Bar

I love spicy food. I might not be able to handle Sichuan Shuizhu  (水煮) as I find that it shuts down my throat which is not a good feeling for anyone to have.... but when it comes to ethnic food generally e.g. Thai / Indian / Korean, the spicy dishes tickle my fancy.

Banchan
Top left: fried anchovies, vegetables, fishcake, beef, spinach and sprouts, radish kimchi and cabbage kimchi in the middle.
The banchan here was probably the most disappointing banchan I've had in the many Korean restaurants I've tried around town... (if you are looking for good refillable kimchi like they do it in Korea, Sura is it!) Save for the cabbage kimchi which was way too heavily salted and spiced, the other items were acceptable but even though we were a table of six the above was what we had in total; so we each probably only had a bite of a few of the banchans. When asked whether we could have a refill they simply said no.
Yakult soju

Korean Steak Tartare
Sweet crisp sliced pears, sliced beef with a bite, and seasoned just lightly with sweetened soy, sesame and the egg yolk... so good we ordered another after the first was devoured.

Oxtail Stew
Tender braised meat in a sweet soy stew with carrots and daikon - what's not to like?!

LA Galbi
BBQ grilled marinated short ribs, served with a side of crisp lettuce to wrap the meat in. Whilst the meat was tender and well seasoned we wished they deboned it so we could just wrap the meat in lettuce.... Without cutlery we found this very hard to do it ourselves!

Godeungeo gui / Grilled mackerel
Not too fishy, lovely with lemon juice.

Spicy Ramen Hotpot
This stew easily feeds 3-4 especially if you order other items. Ingredients in this delicious kimchi flavoured hotpot was rice cakes, pork, bulgogi beef, tofu, Korean sausages, pork and vegetable dumplings and topped with dried ramen! That soup was addictive and just had the perfect amount of heat so even friends who don't have a high tolerance for spice and handle this bad boy.

All in all a delicious meal with great company. Save for the issue with the banchan we were incredibly happy with the dishes, especially the steak tartar, oxtail stew and spicy ramen hotpot...
