うに虎喰 - Tsukiji Itadori Unitora Kurau, Tokyo, Japan
Our first breakfast in Tokyo was na sea urchin specialty store to satisfy our sea urchin cravings... we went to this place by the Tsukiji market and avoided the queues at the popular sushi joints as we were going to get top sushi later.

How to eat Chirashi |
3 kinds native Japanese uni, loved the salted shredded kelp |
Today they had 5 kinds of sea urchin for you to pick from including ones from China and Canada. They all have different prices too. We chose the 3 most expensive ones as they were native to Japan and 2 of which was from Hokkaido. This was glorious - so naturally sweet and briny, with saltiness coming from the kelp. We tasted the 3 kinds of uni separately ("D", "E", "SP"), and hate to say it but the most expensive "SP" was the tastiest... so do it!
Chirashi + Canadian uni |
The chirashi here is the more popular dish. Optional is the uni for an extra ~¥2000. The chirashi was brought out and definitely looked great but we felt the Canadian uni ("B") used in this dish was not at all fresh and had this funky smell like petrol and tasted horrible. We wish we were able to mix it ourselves but our waitress was pretty adamant in doing it for us. Thank goodness for soy sauce and wasabi.
Would I return? Definitely for the Hokkaido uni on rice, and skip the chirashi and other non-Japanese uni altogether.
